Sheep are sheared in the spring. After that, the shepherd goes out into the moor and they often don't return until the beginning of autumn. This means that the shorn wool remains in the shed all summer and the shepherd only has time to process it in the winter. Sorting all the rugs is a huge job. I help Hilde with this task. In exchange, I get wool that I can use for my project.
The wool is often stored in big bags or garbage bags. When it comes off the sheep, the sheep shearer puts it in a bag. As a result, the rugs are often completely twisted together and it is difficult to see where the head and butt are. We try to lay the wool down so that you can clearly see where the back is. We take pictures. Measure or weigh the wool and give it a price. Then it is numbered and stored in the attic until it is sold.
